Ring (or walk) around the island – Graves Island

Graves Island provincial park Nova Scotia

We walked the perimeter of Graves Island on Monday.  It was a lovely, easy walk on a lovely end-of-summer day. There were great views of the ocean and the nearby mainland. The path takes you through some fields, some forest (seemed like old, overgrown farm fields) and an area of former forest munched by the brown spruce longhorn beetle a few years ago (photo above).

The island is a provincial park and has some great campsites overlooking the ocean. The island trail does not actually follow the beach, although we did make several side trips to walk on the shore – who could resist? Maritime plants are common in Nova Scotia and on Monday we observed healthy specimens of maritime plantain, sea heather, and golden rod among others.

The approximately 3 km gravel path is level and very accessible.  The whole island can be circled in about an hour depending on how fast you walk and how many stops you take. The Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association has a great little video about the island. There are maps available at the park office or on a couple signs on the island. For directions to the island check out my Nova Scotia map.

  1. The island looks lovely! Is it you in the pictures? Have you completed the Fundy Foot Path in New Brunswick? I don’t know any hiker from that area and we would like to go there with my friend next weekend. What do you think about the trail? Thank you for your answer 🙂 Kay
